DIXIANA POWER / BUYER RESOURCES

Before you buy
a commercial generator.

Confirm the electrical requirements, operating duty, fuel supply, equipment condition, and written scope. Those details make quotes easier to compare.

What is the difference between kW and kVA?

kW measures real power; kVA measures apparent power. The relationship is kW = kVA × power factor. At 0.8 power factor, 125 kVA corresponds to 100 kW. This calculation is not a generator-sizing recommendation.

Record both ratings from the specification or nameplate, together with voltage, phase, frequency, and operating duty. [1]

What information is needed to size a commercial generator?

A load list, starting requirements, operating sequence, and acceptable electrical response are needed. Running kW alone is not enough; motor starting can determine the required generator size. Have the qualified professional responsible for the project confirm selection. [1]

For a sourcing request, send the approved specification when available. Identify requirements still awaiting confirmation rather than filling them with guesses.

Are standby, prime, and continuous ratings interchangeable?

No. They describe different operating duties. Compare expected hours, load variation, average load, and the manufacturer’s permitted use. A headline kW value does not establish suitability for every application. [2]

What to clarify for the intended duty
DutyInformation to confirm
StandbyBackup application, outage profile, and the exact manufacturer rating. Standby and emergency standby may have different limits.
PrimeRegular operating hours, variable-load profile, average load, and any permitted overload conditions.
ContinuousSustained operating load and the manufacturer’s continuous-duty rating.

What should you check before choosing diesel or natural gas?

For diesel equipment, confirm fuel storage and maintenance requirements. For natural gas equipment, confirm adequate pressure and flow under operating conditions and load changes. An existing gas connection does not establish capacity. [1] [3]

The project team also needs to address site conditions, permits, emissions requirements, installation scope, and the intended use. Ask for missing information before comparing equipment solely on price.

What records should you request for a used generator?

Request nameplate photos, hours, previous use, service records, known faults, and available test reports. Confirm what was tested and when; agree any inspection, witnessed testing, and warranty terms before purchasing. [4]

See our used generator checklist for the equipment handoff. Owners preparing to sell a generator should gather the same records and note whether the unit is connected and when it needs to be removed.

What should a generator quote include?

Ask for a written scope that identifies the unit and assigns each part of the handoff. Use this checklist to compare proposals:

  • Make, model, rating, fuel, voltage, phase, frequency, condition, and hours.
  • Included tank, enclosure, controls, transfer equipment, and accessories.
  • Records, inspections, testing, and warranty terms.
  • Loading, freight, unloading, removal, installation, and commissioning responsibilities.
  • Price, any sourcing fee, payment terms, exclusions, availability, and delivery schedule.

Dixiana Power accepts equipment requests and owner submissions. Availability, price, and commercial terms are confirmed separately for each opportunity.
